Conditions of use
Effective 17 October 2026 · Terms version 1.0
These terms apply to the ABG Bench website, calculator, interpretations, charts, differential lists, guides and examples, including downloaded, installed and offline copies (the “Service”). Read them before using the Service.
1. Intended use
ABG Bench is a clinical reference and educational tool for qualified healthcare professionals and supervised trainees. It provides calculations and general information, not patient-specific medical advice, a definitive diagnosis, a treatment recommendation or a standard of care. It is not intended for patients to diagnose or treat themselves. Using the Service does not create a clinician–patient relationship with its owners, operators or contributors.
2. Clinical responsibility
You remain responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, monitoring and care of your patients. Exercise independent professional judgement and follow applicable professional standards, local protocols and laboratory guidance. Consider the history, examination, previous results, treatment and other investigations. Do not base a clinical decision solely on an ABG Bench result or allow use of the Service to delay assessment, escalation or urgent treatment.
Before acting on a result, independently verify the entered measurements, units, sample type, collection timing, reference intervals, calculation method and clinical plausibility. Check material calculations against an appropriate independent source. If a result is unexpected, incomplete or inconsistent with the patient’s condition, resolve the discrepancy before relying on it. A suggested differential is not a diagnosis; absence from a list does not exclude a condition.
3. Calculation and interpretation limits
The acid–base model is intended for adult samples at 37°C. Arterial compensation rules must not be applied as arterial conclusions to venous, capillary or unknown samples. Equations, compensation ranges and screening thresholds are approximations with defined assumptions. Assay differences, missing measurements, unusual physiology, extreme values and borderline results can affect the output. Use a suitable local laboratory interval when available.
Charts describe the stated mathematical model; they do not predict a patient’s response to treatment. Worked examples are synthetic. Software testing checks implementation and does not establish clinical validity, regulatory approval or suitability for an individual patient. Independent clinical validation of this app has not been completed. The Methods page forms part of the information needed to interpret its results.
4. Accuracy, availability and warranties
Errors, omissions, outdated information and interruptions may occur. Medical knowledge, laboratory methods and clinical guidance change. Subject to the rights preserved below, the Service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without a guarantee of accuracy, completeness, currency, uninterrupted operation or fitness for a particular purpose. To the extent permitted by applicable law, the owners, operators and contributors exclude warranties and conditions that would otherwise be implied. No statement on this page removes a guarantee or obligation that the law makes mandatory.
5. Rights that cannot be excluded
Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or modifies a consumer guarantee, statutory right, remedy, duty or liability that cannot lawfully be excluded, restricted or modified. This includes rights under the Australian Consumer Law where it applies, and equivalent protections in other applicable jurisdictions. Any limitation in these terms operates only to the extent the relevant law permits. If a provision is unenforceable, it does not remove those protections or invalidate the remaining provisions.
6. Limitation of liability
Subject to the rights and liabilities preserved in section 5, and to the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, ABG Bench’s owners, operators and contributors exclude liability for loss, damage, injury or adverse medical outcomes arising from access to, use of, inability to use, or reliance on the Service.
This exclusion includes liability arising in contract, tort (including negligence) or otherwise, and includes diagnostic or treatment errors, personal injury or death, loss or corruption of data, business interruption, loss of income and indirect or consequential loss, but only where exclusion of that liability is lawful. It applies to the website and to installed, downloaded or offline copies. It does not transfer or remove any duty or liability that applicable law requires the provider to retain.
7. Offline copies and updates
Downloaded files and saved offline copies may become outdated and do not necessarily update automatically. Check the version and current Methods before use. You are responsible for maintaining an appropriate device, browser and backup of any locally saved work. Browser storage can be cleared or removed, and uninterrupted access or retention of saved data is not guaranteed. Changes to these terms are identified by a new effective date and apply prospectively; downloading an update does not remove rights relating to earlier use.
8. Clinical information and external resources
The calculator processes entered measurements in your browser. Do not enter patient names, record numbers or other identifiers. You are responsible for complying with confidentiality, data-protection and institutional requirements, including securing shared devices and exported reports. Loading the website still involves requests to the hosting provider. External references and links are provided for information; their content and availability are outside ABG Bench’s control, and their inclusion is not an endorsement or guarantee. Third-party services have their own terms and privacy practices.
9. Ownership and permitted use
ABG Bench is free to use for clinical reference and education. You may save an unmodified copy for your own use and use its outputs in patient care and teaching, subject to confidentiality obligations and these limitations. Free access does not grant permission to republish, redistribute, sell or incorporate the software, design or explanatory content into another product or service without the rights holder’s permission, except where applicable law permits. Do not remove ownership or licence notices or imply an endorsement.
Third-party components, including bundled fonts, retain their own licences. ABG Bench does not claim ownership of measurements you enter or clinical records you create. These terms do not claim ownership of published equations, scientific facts or material belonging to others, and do not restrict rights granted under those third-party licences.
